Company and Position

Loowatt designs and manufactures patented high-quality waterless toilets, with waste processed through our bespoke machinery and conveyed as feedstock into utility-run anaerobic digestion systems to produce power. Our team has been building innovative sanitation technology since 2010. We take a hands-on approach, not shying away from life’s most difficult challenges. We have been funded by private investment, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Innovate UK, among others.

Over 70% of the population today is without access to sewers. In emerging markets, Loowatt is expanding coverage in the low-income urban communities through B2B sales to utilities and service providers including projects in Madagascar, the Philippines and South Africa. In the UK, Loowatt’s toilets serve off-grid events and construction sites.

Loowatt toilets use a polymer refill as a consumable to convey human waste from toilets to treatment systems. The refill enables us to deliver undiluted and segregated human waste to energy-generating and nutrient recovering treatment systems, while our processing equipment facilitates management of the film—1-2% of the total waste stream—in a controlled and responsible way. Treatment solutions for used refills respond to the material specification and include industrial composting, chemical recycling, and energy-from-waste combustion.

Loowatt refills in the UK are converted from polymer film reels at Technoplas, an innovative producer of bespoke packaging solutions base in Wakefield. For overseas customers, refills are produced locally through license agreements.

We are seeking a Materials Technologist to manage the Loowatt refill, with work to include:

1.Building a full understanding of material specification boundaries:

a) Production into refills

b) Use in toilets

c) Processing in Loowatt machinery

d) End-of-life treatment solutions.

2.The Materials Technologist will also be expected to build a commercial and international understanding of polymer film materials including

a) market landscape

b) cost of refill materials

c) other elements of business viability specific to Loowatt.

For the first nine months of their work with us, the Project Engineer will be seconded to Technoplas, and will be working with Loowatt and Technoplas engineers and reporting to the Loowatt Delivery Team.

This role will benefit from both mechanical and chemical understanding of polymer films as well as hands-on approach to testing and a practical, product-oriented and commercially driven mindset.
