Screws are the most common implant in surgery, but screw sizing remains inconsistent. Surgeons spend 20% of operation time sizing screws, taking an average of 7.5 X-rays per case, and screw length errors lead to a 4–6% reoperation rate. London Devices have developed a screw sizing platform, SmartGauge, using small sensors to size screws while the surgeon drills with 2 mm accuracy. As well as removing the need for a separate measuring step this is quicker than existing techniques, removing screw errors and reducing patient risk, need to redo operations and possible litigation.
Dr Ruben Doyle is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at London Devices. His role spans product strategy, technical development and regulatory readiness. As London Devices scale his focus is shifting towards building organisational capability through strengthening leadership, governance and cross-functional communication. He describes how “as our team grows, I need to build structures that empower others while maintaining clarity and accountability. Developing these skills will help me transition from leading projects to leading leaders”.
Ruben recognises that the Shott Scale Up Accelerator offers a unique opportunity to refine his leadership and strategic skills during a pivotal growth phase for London Devices. He plan to use the mentoring and coaching network to challenge his decision-making and strengthen London Devices’ governance structures as they scale. He also plans to use the workshops to help him evolve from a technical founder to a commercial leader.
The Shott Scale Up Accelerator comes at a critical inflection point for both Ruben and London Devices. They have proven their technology and secured early funding, but now must transition from an R&D-focused startup to a commercially driven organisation. Ruben acknowledges that “the programme’s focus on leadership development, governance and access to experienced mentors directly aligns with this need. It will provide the tools, perspective and network to help me guide London Devices through sustainable, confident growth.”
