With our increasing dependence on battery systems, being able to use and enhance their health, charging, cycle life, and range will be key to making best use of them. Breathe Battery Technologies is pioneering new ways to do this through the world’s first health adaptive battery charging software.
Breathe was founded at Imperial College London in 2019 by Dr Yan Zhao, Dr Ian Campbell, and Professor Greg Offer. It was awarded a Faraday Institution Entrepreneurial Fellowship in the same year. Today, the company supplies software to electric car, laptop, and smartphone clients around the world. This enhances battery system performance and enable manufacturers to get to market more quickly. In 2022, global smartphone brand OPPO partnered with Breathe, licensing the company’s Breathe Life software product to double the battery lifetime of OPPO’s latest Reno8 Series of smartphones.
Dr Ian Campbell, CEO and Co-Founder, is an Irish-born engineer and leads Breathe on its mission to modernise the way battery systems around the world are controlled. He played a key role in the development of the company’s early technology platforms and patents.
He sees the Shott Scale up Accelerator as one of the ways of sourcing guidance on how to do that well. He describes their situation as, “feel[ing] like this is a critically important time for our business. We’ve put in the work to get the business off the ground, we have incredible technology, products, and early customers. Every opportunity is in front of us, and we need to grasp it, and scale up to do that.”
Ian is particularly keen to learn how to better communicate with and motivate large internal teams to support their ambitious plans.
He recognises that mentorship and constructive criticism can help. In particular, he plans to make use of the cohort to learn from his peers – especially those ahead of Breathe – and to share what they have learned.
To supply Breathe’s products to more clients in robotics, consumer electronics, and automotive around the world, It will increase Its laboratory capacity to support a higher throughout of validation for Its client systems. It will also hire to grow Its engineering and sales teams and strengthen Its brand as a leading battery system performance company.
