100 million single-use, nonrecyclable period products are thrown away globally every year. Because of low regulation the standard menstrual products available on the market can contain up to 3,000 undisclosed ingredients that can negatively affect the body.
DAME has been responsible for preventing six million single-use applicators from going to waste with its world first, award winning reusable tampon applicator. It has since gone onto launch Its patent-pending reusable pads and pants using high-performance wicking technology.
The business is carbon negative, climate positive, and a B Corp. It believes that business can be used as a force for good. DAME also seeks to tackle the inherent stigmatism that is attached to this natural bodily function, through its bold approach to advertising and its educational work with schools and teenagers.
Celia Pool is the co-founder and co-CEO of DAME. She is looking to use the Schott Scale up Accelerator to develop her leadership and communication skills. She sees the training as important as, “I have never had formal training and would welcome support on how to lead an early stage SME.”
She recognises that while no two businesses are the same, “there is a lot of commonality and the modules offered look incredibly interesting and relevant to our business, especially at the stage we’re at.”
DAME is at an exciting stage in the growth of its business, about to take on the second tranche of funding which will enable them to grow its product line and team. Its aim is to expand its range and distribution over the next 12 months, continuing its disruption of this $63 billion industry.
DAME want to become the number one alternative period brand in the UK, allowing people to have a more sustainable and healthier choice. It also has big campaigns planned, and aims to push its messaging about removing the stigma from menstruation out to the mass market. It will do this through running their DAMEchangers camps, youth board, and work experience to ensure that the next generation can see how to make change.
