Global demand for food protein is growing by 45,000 tonnes every day with two-thirds from animal and one-third from nonanimal sources.
ENOUGH are pioneering a high scale, sustainable source of food protein, ABUNDA® mycoprotein, to tackle the combined issues of feeding a growing global population and the unsustainable impact of traditional protein farming. It has constructed a first of its kind protein factory in the Netherlands which will initially produce 10,000 tonnes per annum.
The plans are supported and have received funding from the Circular Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking within the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The company has a growing team of 55, spanning 16 nationalities.
Craig Johnston is Co-founder and Director of Strategic Partnerships at ENOUGH. His 30-year career spans manufacturing, new product introduction and technology development across a range of industries.
Craig’s personal goal in joining the Shott Start up Accelerator is to refresh his learning and leadership in context of an expanding company progressing to Series C funding. He highlights the formal leadership training and mentoring as being key tools to support this.
He sees the impact of the Shott Scale up Accelerator as supporting refining ENOUGH’s five-year plan that prioritises increasing capacity to 60,000 tonnes at its site in the Netherlands; looking for a second location by 2025; exploring wider options for extra expansion; and remaining a B2B producer but exploring product format and diversification opportunities.
Over the next 12 to 18 months the company will accelerate extra capacity between 2022 and 2023 using a SAFE and is planning for a Series C in 2023. They aim to producing over a million tonnes of protein per annum by 2032.
