Training general surgeons and gynaecologists has a steep and lengthy learning curve. This is expensive for hospitals, increases waiting lists, and increases waiting times for patients.
Inovus medical® is a leading developer of widely accessible surgical training systems and applications. The company uses a combination of computer vision and sensor-based tracking technologies during simulated procedures. This allows the capture of vital performance metrics that can be used to measure progress throughout a surgeon’s career. This data, via an online learning management system, can help healthcare providers and educators better tailor and target their surgical education. This platform allowed thousands of general surgeons and gynaecologists to continue training at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Inovus products have demonstrated an ability to reduce operating time by up to 66% and improve the economy of movement by up to 72%. This improvement directly translates into cost savings for hospitals and reduced recovery times for patients.
Jordan Van Flute is the Co-founder and CTO of Inovus Medical. He leads both software and hardware development of the companies surgical training. With support from the Shott Scale up Accelerator he aims to strengthen his leadership abilities in readiness to take the company through a period of significant growth.
Jordan recognises that, “Over the course of the past decade, I have had the opportunity to be mentored by several incredibly successful individuals. Unfortunately, those individuals have mostly come from a commercial background. Being a founder CTO without access to engineering mentors has a times left me feeling isolated.” He believes the networking opportunities and mentors on the Shott Start up Accelerator will help him to address this
The company is just starting its scale up journey, having recently raised £5m in growth capital. Making the shift from startup to scale up presents many new challenges for the business and its founders. With more staff joining the team each month it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure that company culture and core values remain intact. Jordan believes that being a part of the Shott Scale up Accelerator will ensure that they are taking the right steps on that journey
Over the course of the next 12 to 18 months, Inovus plans to expand its existing simulator portfolio and enter the beginning phases of introducing its surgical tracking technology into theatre.
