Floor vibrations in buildings affect occupants, vibration-sensitive equipment and processes, and are difficult and expensive to put right. FSD Active have developed CALMFLOOR, an active vibration control technology that works like noise cancelling headphones for floor vibrations.
CALMFLOOR has applications in existing buildings as well as new builds. With London office space vacancies at 20-year highs, office to lab conversions are a massive opportunity. However, the vibration requirements for labs are more stringent and CALMFLOOR can deliver the improvements required for this. In new builds CALMFLOOR can help with efficient use of structural materials, and so the move towards net zero construction while meeting floor vibration specifications.
After 20 years research into active vibration control as a senior academic, Dr Paul Reynolds left academia in 2021 to focus full time as CEO of FSD Active. He acknowledges his role is changing from a broadly-focused founder–CEO to a long-term, strategically-focused CEO role. He notes: “The accelerator has come just at the right time to help me to make this transition.”
Reflecting on the impact of the Shott Scale Up Accelerator Paul; says: “My primary focus is to further develop my commercial and leadership skills to enable me to serve even better as CEO of FSD Active. The focus should be on business strategy, leadership team development, and communication with stakeholders. I'm also considering using some of the external funding to focus on scale-up mindset.”
In the next 12 months FSD Active are looking to increase their revenue threefold and introduce several strategic initiatives to further develop their technology; improve their supply chain; build sales relationships; and improve marketing, sales, and customer acquisition. The systems coming from this should mean that the company should be able to survive and thrive without day-to-day intervention from the founding team, building a long-term strategy for success.
