The world’s annual consumption of plastics has increased from 5 million tonnes in the 1950s to nearly 100 million tonnes today. The UK generates an estimated 5 million tonnes of plastic waste per annum, more than 40 kg per household.
Notpla is a sustainable packaging startup using seaweed and plants as an alternative to plastic to reduce single-use plastics. Notpla Ooho is a plant-based coating to give water and grease resistance to cardboard for food containers. This has recently been used by the UEFA for all food vendors at the Women Euro finals at Wembley Stadium. Unlike PLA and other bioplastics, the coated board is 100% plastic-free and home compostable.
Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez is the Co-founder and Co-CEO of Notpla, together with Pierre Paslier. Rodrigo is looking to use the Shott Scale up Accelerator to develop his leadership skills as his role of Co-CEO evolves. In particular, he sees team management skills and taking the tougher strategic decisions as key areas to improve.
He recognises that the mentoring offered as part of the Shott Scale up Accelerator would be beneficial as he does not have a line manager above him to share his challenges and doubts.
He also recognises that as they scale up, that he is reaching the limits of his existing skillset, and with over 60 employees he is conscious that the challenges are going to grow in complexity.
One of those challenges is looking into how to expand Notpla’s operations across different countries. It also needs to restructure the team to have the ability to grow and keep innovating in the space. Over the next 14 months it will be raising its next round of founding, with series B being crucial for the expansion of its products and impact. Its aspiration by then is to have over 100 employees while retaining the spirit of an agile, small and fresh startup.
