NuQuantum Ltd was spun out of research being undertaken at the University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. The company is tackling the holy grail of quantum optics; how to efficiently manipulate single particles of light. It is developing technology to exploit the quantum-mechanical properties of single photons to encode, process and communicate information.
Quantum computing will deliver a huge leap forward in computation and the ability to solve classes of complex problems beyond the reach of even the most powerful digital super-computers. However, at the moment there is a limit to how big a single quantum computer can scale and this is exacerbated by the need for error correction. Analogous to the high-speed busses and networking needed for classical computing, Nu Quantum is working on unlocking the power of quantum computing via high-performance photonic interconnections between QC nodes.
Dr Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, an award-winning quantum physicist, is a co-founder and CEO of Nu Quantum. Carmen joined the Shott Scale Up Accelerator programme in 2022 and sees it as further developing her people management skill-set. “Creating great teams, motivating people, making people work effectively together as a real team, setting appropriate goals and empowering people to achieve them are key. I also feel that the accelerator will hone my strategic thinking and balance that vision with execution.”
Carmen thinks that Nu Quantum will be the European leader in Quantum Networking. The company is partnering with leading academic groups and commercial QC companies to realise transformative elements that will be combined towards an holistic quantum switching fabric. It will be used by quantum computing companies to accelerate the time-to-market of high utility, scalable and performant quantum computing, addressing a multi-billion $ market.
