By utilising the power of physics, quantum computing has the potential to disrupt across industries through a seismic leap in our ability to simulate complex systems. Applications of this are expected to provide solutions to problems that cannot be simulated in conventional supercomputers and impact areas from new material discovery to industrial process optimisation. Currently one challenge is producing quantum computing in a scalable manner. Aegiq is an award-winning spinout from the University of Sheffield that uses a unique hybrid integrated photonics approach based on foundry-based semiconductor manufacturing to solve this scalability challenge.
Dr Scott Dufferwiel co-founded Aegiq in 2019 where he is a Director and CTO. Leading the engineering team, he is responsible for product development and the company’s technology roadmap alongside honing company strategy to deliver long-term growth. As Aegiq is commercialising and delivering its first products Scott notes “Working in the nascent quantum industry, I believe the strategic choices we are making in the early days of the company will cascade forward to deliver long-term success and growth.” Scott joined the Shott Scale up Accelerator in 2023 and intends to leverage the wide experience and expertise from Mentors to allow him to hone company strategy with his co-founders to scale Aegiq into a global leader. He also recognises how this offers a timely engagement to allow the company to hone strategy as they grow and ensure that this framework for success is the foundation of their growth period.
Having received substantial equity and grant investment the company is expanding rapidly as it brings its quantum photonic solutions and services to market. Over the next few years, they intend to expand the business significantly via new equity investment to allow the company to deliver their quantum photonic solutions to customers and partners.
